In Eye of the Redeemer, self-described “average joe” Ray Silver is in the middle of a midlife crisis and a personal quest to justify his life when he finds himself on a sixty-year-old naval relic sailing for the Philippines—an accidental key player in a covert CIA operation. After he is suddenly thrust into the spotlight as a national hero, he tries to balance a budding relationship with finding out what really happened to his long-lost brother, Frank, who may or may not have been with him in the jungles of Luzon. In Beyond Redemption, Ray's search for Frank continues, even as his new wife encourages him to surrender to the simplicity of their Hawaiian family life. But his innocent search proves deadly and he's not the only one interested in the outcome—especially when he enlists the help of a young investigative reporter. The more they dig, the more red flags arise—at the CIA, NSA, and with powerful San Francisco Congresswoman Francine Manetti, preoccupied with Frank and a package of documents he supposedly had. Ray soon learns that Manetti, in her quest to become the first female Speaker of the House, is a force to be reckoned with—a painful lesson learned through congressional hearings and underhanded dealings alike. Can Ray keep his family from becoming collateral damage? Is Frank Silver alive? Is Manetti willing to do anything to keep those documents from stalling her drive to become the most powerful woman in America?

This installment of the Ray Silver collection of political intrigue tackles Capitol Hill shenanigans. When an ambitious congresswoman - and Ray's possession of mystery documents - begin rattling the idyllic life Ray and his wife, Leigh Ann, have built on the island of Oahu with a beachfront home, a new clinic, and twin baby girls, Raymond's hand is eventually forced to open up a can of whoop-ass. Even his wife, Leigh Ann, is pulled into the intrigue. She plays a role in bringing down the baddies. I also enjoyed being transported to the Hawaiian isle of Oahu where the author captures the easygoing, laid back lifestyle - a combination of work, play, the people and beauty that is wonderful and unique about life in the Hawaiian tropics. There is a multicultural touch to this story in the way the author weaves different characters, places and people together. Long-lost siblings reunite, new romances are kindled, old flames face-off in a shocking confrontation. Lots of twists and turns, (a scene when 2 characters were having revelations about each other while talking to different people was pretty cool) and good old dirty justice against the bad guys. While I wavered between giving this book 4 or 5 stars, there was good-n-plenty espionage and more than enough political corruption to satisfy enthusiasts of the genre, plus story threads with mainstream issues that readers will find timely and may also feel passionate about. A few minor punctuation quirks aside, this IS a big book of intrigue and action, with layered relationships. It wraps up loose ends and intros a GREAT new motive for Ray Silver's next adventure! I look forward to reading it. 4.5 stars!

Beyond Redemption Richard I Levine 9781481216746 Books Reviews

After having read Richard Levine's first book 'Eye of the Redeemer', I couldn't wait for the sequel to come out. I wasn't disappointed. I was hooked from the first pages because of the intense confrontation between protagonist Ray Silver and Congresswoman Manetti. Levine's characters are well developed and engaging. I felt as if I wanted to hang out with some of them. This book was hard to put down. With each turn of the page, there was a new twist that kept me on the edge of my seat. I'm hoping that Levine keeps this series going because I want to spend more time with Ray, Leigh Anne, and the rest of the gang.
When I reviewed Dr. Levine's first book, "The Eye of the Redeemer" I thought that it was a wonderful start for a very promising new author. When "Beyond Redemption" was published, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. Well, I was blown away! Beyond Redemption was Beyond Better than his first book in so many ways. The further development of characters and their character was terrific. The pull at one's heart strings by the patriotism of the Silver Family as well as their friends was moving...almost to tears. The government antagonists were, frighteningly, likely more real than imaginary. Dr. Levine weaves a great story that pulls you in right from the beginning and doesn't let you go. I can't wait to read the next book from my new "favorite" author.
Hounded by a powerful congresswoman determined to prove him a willing participant in a conspiracy, Dr. Ray Silver finds himself defending his role in what he contends was simply a trip to the Philippines.

Silver teams up with Jenna Grant, a young investigative reporter (who bears an uncanny resemblance to his wife), to discover what is driving Congresswoman Manetti's witch hunt and why she is so interested in discovering what became of Ray's brother, Frank who was supposedly killed during a covert mission.

In this sequel to Eye of the Redeemer, Author Richard I. Levine offers seamless continuity and tightness in both the plot and writing. In a dynamic, multi-faceted plot that unearths as many twists and mysteries as it answers questions, Levine manages to naturally relate the major plot points of the first novel allowing readers who haven't read Eye of the Redeemer to get the full impact of Dr. Ray Silver's dilemma in Beyond Redemption.

Levine's narrative is solid and effective on numerous fronts. Levine portrays a credible atmosphere during the exploratory committee hearings, from the physical setting to the bureaucratic posturing. Strong dialogue also captures the nuances of the diverse personalities, conveying and relaying anything from Ray's comebacks when the congresswoman demands respect, to all that is implied when Ray's former partner in the operation, Stella, hints at her continued affection for Ray.

Levine's characters are well developed and engaging. As the plot untangles through swift but smooth chapter transitions, the layers of the characters' complex personalities and motivations reveal themselves and leaves the reader guessing just who is conspiring against whom. And just when the pieces of the puzzle seem to have fallen in place, something, or rather someone is missing and awaiting the next Ray Silver adventure.

BEYOND REDEMPTION is an absorbing and intricate mystery abounding with intrigue and government conspiracies.
